The easiest way to choose a laptop is to define the task first and only then look at the specs: a laptop for documents and video calls and a laptop for video editing call for very different requirements, and overpaying for one often means falling short on the other.

Processor and RAM

For office work, browsing and studying, a modern 4-core processor (Intel Core i3/i5 or AMD Ryzen 3/5) with 8 GB of RAM is enough. For large spreadsheets, light design work or programming, 16 GB is a better fit. Video editing and demanding games call for at least 16, ideally 32 GB, plus a discrete GPU.

Why SSD, not HDD

An SSD loads the system and apps far faster than an HDD and isn’t bothered by being carried around — that matters for a laptop. 512 GB is a comfortable minimum.

Display and battery life

13–14 inches is easy to carry, 15–16 is more comfortable at a desk. Full HD is a reasonable minimum resolution; IPS or OLED panels deliver more accurate colour than cheap TN panels.
